Three entrants took top honors in a cartoon contest sponsored by the Chicago Community Leadership Board Communications Committee, and supported by several community newspapers. All the students were in the art class of Kathyrn Gemperle at St. Gregory The Great High School, 1677 W Bryn Mawr Ave., Chicago.
First place went to Eric Lipair for his cartoon strip warning of the dangers of sun bathing without protection against harmful rays, which cause cancer. He will receive $100. Second place went to Michelle Hernandez who depicted a friend’s death, which prompted her cartoon character to get help to stop smoking from the American Cancer Society. She will receive $75 for second place. Third place went to Steven Borges, who portrayed someone who changed his image and health by exercise. He will receive $50.
The entries were judged by several members of the Communications Committee, which represents several newspapers throughout the city. The committee sponsored the contest in conjunction with the Chicago office of the American Cancer Society, which seeks to educate Chicago youth about healthy lifestyles. Two-thirds of all cancers can be avoided, according to ACS, by not smoking, moderate or no drinking, exercise and good nutrition. ACS also emphasizes early detection as an effective means to fight cancer.
