Planned Parenthood of Illinois Launches Vasectomy Services

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - HealthPlanned Parenthood of Illinois (PPIL) has launched no-scalpel vasectomy permanent sterilization services for men at the Near North Health Center located at 1200 N. LaSalle St.

No-scalpel vasectomies are over 99 percent effective in permanent sterilization. During a no-scalpel vasectomy, the vas tubes that bring sperm from the testes to the semen are blocked through a small incision on the scrotum, preventing pregnancy. There is no change in sex drive, no change in climax sensation and no change in erections.

Sterilization is not immediately effective. It takes 8 to 16 weeks or 12 to 20 ejaculations for the sperm to completely leave the semen. A follow-up test is performed three months after the procedure to confirm sterilization. PPIL offers no-scalpel vasectomy, including pain medications and follow-up appointments for less than the cost of private doctors and much less than the lifetime cost of contraception for the female partner. Many private insurance companies cover the service. Some men may qualify for further discounts.

PPIL is now accepting patients for no-scalpel vasectomy services. To make an appointment for a consultation call 800-230-PLAN or visit www.ppil.org.
