MacCormac College’s court reporting program was one of a select few around the country recently awarded a $295,850 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant, called the 2012 Training for Real-time Writers (TRTW) award, was announced in August 2012. The grant has enabled MacCormac to create two new certificate programs which both launch in January 2013: CART providing and Broadcast Captioning. CART stands for Communication Access Real-time Translation, and CART providers turn the spoken word into written captions for individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. CART Providers often work in education settings such as a university or high school, assisting a person who is hard-of-hearing to progress through school.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010-2020), those with training in CART and Broadcast Captioning will have the best job prospects in years to come.
