Mexico Fighting a New Cinco de Mayo

By Daniel Nardini

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - CommentaryIt seems to put it mildly unsettling that current U.S. President Donald Trump is intent to attack the sovereignty of Mexico. Trump has threatened unilateral military action by sending drones into Mexican territory to attack “Mexican cartels” with or without the consultation of the Mexican government. Further, Trump has threatened to attack areas with significant populations of Mexicans in an effort to get the Mexican cartels. This is in effect war against Mexico itself.

We must keep in mind that a lot of northern Mexico, and especially along the U.S.-Mexico border, is the hub for major manufacturing for products not only heading into the United States but also to other parts of the Americas and the world. Whatever the Mexican cartels may be doing in northern Mexico, it is thoroughly ill-advised to put it mildly to use the sledgehammer of U.S. military action in this part of Mexico. Not only could the U.S. military kill members of the Mexican cartels but also many, many innocent Mexican nationals as well.

Military action we must keep in mind is for military targets and military objectives. Attacking criminal cartels will only cause collateral damage because not only will cartel safe houses be hit but also homes, hospitals, schools and companies become inadvertent targets. And not working with the Mexican government in attacking Mexican people, no matter who they are, is an act of war. Attacking Mexican territory is an act of war no matter what the intention. We have to keep in mind that the Mexican government has been fighting the cartels for over 20 years. The Mexican government and people no more want the cartels than does the U.S. government and American people.

U.S. unilaterally using military force and threatening hostile actions against Mexico will not only cause physical damage to Mexico’s cities but turn most Mexicans in northern Mexico, an area that has been largely pro-American, into a vast sea of bad blood that can last for a generation. Mexican President Gloria Sheinbaum is now facing a very unpredictable and volatile American president who is threatening her country. She is fighting a new Cinco de Mayo—a threat to the integrity and sovereignty to Mexico. No matter what Trump may think, in the effort to replace China as the main manufacturing power in the world, Mexico is a very critical part of this new alternative supply chain. Trump’s tariffs and war against Mexico is most certainly the end of this.
