Everyday, I take my wife to work when she has her work days. I then go run errands like buy food, pay the bills, wash the laundry, and take care of the house. When her shift is finished, I bring my wife back home. Because of inflation, it is hard for us to save money for us to go on vacation. Like everything else, basic commodities are costly, and it is sometimes hard to buy the foods we want. Things produced in Illinois like corn, soybeans and roma tomatoes are not a problem buying because they are grown here. When my wife is off, we usually stay at home. This is pretty much all we do, and all that is necessary for us to do. This is our pattern of life, and however monotonous it is, at least it is predictable and stable.
Sadly, this is true in so many ways only in states like Illinois. In Republican-controlled states, so many families are having their lives upended. While these things are happening in Democrat-controlled states too, immigration raids are happening on a far larger scale in the Republican-controlled states. The real problem with these states is that these unannounced acts target anyone indiscriminately. It is affecting not only the undocumented but also those who are legal permanent residents and even U.S. citizens. These immigration raids are being carried out without the approval of the courts or any legal framework. This is especially dangerous as so many innocent people are being caught up in such raids and their lives are being upended.
The one saving grace as of this point is living in a blue state where my wife and I are have some legal protection from such arbitrary immigration raids where armed masked personnel can just swoop down and grab me, my wife or anyone else they please. Such raids make anywhere we live into constitution-free zones where we have no constitutional protections or safeguards. Sanctuary policies for cities and states that have them simply mean that if U.S. immigration and for that matter law enforcement must follow legal procedures that have been established for over two centuries. Without these procedures, any powerful group of people can simply deny us all our rights and legal protections. Sanctuary policies also mean that local and state police will not cooperate in any arbitrary actions by federal government agencies, no matter who they are, without warrants for arrest signed by judges.
A federal court in Chicago has simply reaffirmed that sanctuary polices by both cities and states fall in line with the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which prevents the federal government from forcing any form of coercive cooperation from local and state authorities to federal policies. Under the U.S. Constitution, the states have some measure of autonomy that protects them from the federal government exercising total power over the rights and authority given to the states by the U.S. Constitution. This will ensure that individuals and families like my wife and I can live our lives without the brutal power and evil powers of a madman in the White House from having total power to uproot us.
But then, we all have to be wary of what U.S. President Donald Trump, a man convicted of 34 felonies, found guilty of sexual assault, and so many other crimes to name may try and do. Actually, the real problem is not even Trump. It is the whole of the Republican Party which is enabling him to do the things he is doing to this beautiful country. Sanctuary policies simply are preventing all of this arbitrary chaos from affecting every part of America.
The Safety of Sanctuary States
