The Republican-controlled U.S. Congress has once again failed the American people and this country. In an effort to prevent any inquiry on the whole Jeffery Epstein files that may implicate U.S. President Donald Trump, the U.S. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson recessed the U.S. Congress early so that there would be nothing done on the Epstein files. Sadly, it also means nothing else will be done either. What the Republicans have done could not have come at a worse critical time.
Meanwhile, the whole country is suffering from inflation. Now this inflation is not new—it was there before Trump was reelected. However, with the Congress out, nothing is being done to control inflation. This is critical for the nation as a whole because the Republicans won the elections in 2024 on the promise to fight inflation. This is not happening. Even in Dollar Tree stores, a number of items like paper products and soap products and cleaners have been raised by twenty-five cents (the crazy thing is that these products are all made in the U.S.A.). In other places, the prices have risen higher.
And what about trade negotiations? Even if somehow Trump gets the trade deals he wants, he has no real personnel to negotiate the specifics. He fired all of these people in January and February, and has not replaced them. Worse, since Congress is out, none of these deals can be ratified since it is the Congress that ratifies treaties and trade deals. The executive branch has no authority in this regards. The executive can only negotiate. And what about ratifying any new military treaties and alliances? The Congress is again out, and so all of this has come to a standstill. And what if, heaven forbid, Trump decides to put us in a war? With the Congress out, they cannot invoke the War Powers Act to put a stop to him.
Just as equally bad is the fact that belligerent powers like Russia and China will not stop what they are doing, and what if they make a threatening military move? America’s national security will be at risk, and with Congress out this could not come at a worse time. Additionally, the U.S. economy is sputtering. The United States added one of the worst jobs gain in recent memory from the latest economic reports. Infrastructure building has virtually come to a standstill. Without infrastructure building, the economy itself comes to a standstill and things that could greatly improve our local communities does not happen.
Finally, the issue of immigration is being left unresolved. It seems that the Congress would rather let Trump just throw out people without congressional oversight. Only the judiciary is actually giving some push-back on the unannounced, warrant-less and damaging U.S. immigration raids being conducted by the Trump administration. Think of all the lost man hours, the people who do the vital jobs in the agriculture sector (who picks our fruits and vegetables?) being taken away and spending who knows how long in detention and being deported, and the people building the infrastructure we need no longer being there because of the immigration raids.
The Congress spinelessly handed a lot of its power to the executive branch, and now we are seeing the results of how poorly run our government is. Congress has criminally handed over its responsibilities to the executive, and the American people as a whole are suffering for lack of important decisions not being made since Congress is not in session. But the final joke will be on the Congress. The whole Epstein case will not go away no matter how much the Republican Party as a whole is trying to avoid the issue. And in their pursuit to kill the whole case, they are letting the whole country crash and burn. It seems the Republicans will stop at nothing to keep total power at the cost of a major scandal, killing even talk about the Epstein case, and even trying to redistrict localities in their own states to try and keep control over the Congress in 2026. To the Republicans, I have to ask is it worth it to wreck the whole country to keep total power at any cost?
While Congress is Gone
