More Red, More Blue America Part II

By Daniel Nardini

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - CommentaryThe frightening thing in my view is that neither the Democratic Party nor Republican Party want to think twice about re-arranging districts in the states they control. On the contrary, they are going full speed in redistricting. Those Republican districts in Democratic-controlled states will now basically lose the power of their ballots. The same is happening in Republican-controlled states. In the scheme of things, it might balance out the congressional elections for 2026, and yet it means that the control the Republican and Democratic parties have in their respective states will now be way more absolute. You might as well call the individual states virtual countries, and the Blue states (Democratic) will be in some kind of alliance against the Red (Republican) states. This of course is affecting the federal government. The federal agencies themselves are now becoming pawns of a power-struggle between the two parties, and it seems that the U.S. Congress has either become little more than a rubber stamp for one party or a shouting match for the politicians while little or nothing is being done to help the country.

What makes all of this so much worse is that third parties will be even more shut out of the political process. Take for example the Libertarian Party USA. Founded back 1971, the Libertarian Party believes in free markets, personal freedom, constitutional rights and protections, and most of all non-interventionism. In this case, non-interventionism means opposing the use of force and coercion in politics and instead working together through voluntary action. In short, another way of speaking truth to power. The Libertarian Party believes in governing by principle rather than who has the power, money and influence to make things work for the American people. For those interested in knowing more about the Libertarian Party, you can contact them at their website http://www.lp.org, or contact the Libertarian Party of Illinois at 217-864-8336. Then there is also the Green Party USA., the fourth largest party in the country. The Green Party was founded in 1984 on the premise of environmentalism, participatory democracy, social justice and fighting racism and inequality. Many Americans feel is that there is no way to break the duopoly that controls this country. But unless we break this duopoly, the politics will end up more being a zero sum game where there is only one rule and that is to win at all costs. The first casualty has become civility, and down the road it will eventually be the U.S. Constitution. Having more than two political parties could change the balance of power, or at least influence the two ruling parties that they might need to change their ways or they might lose to a third or fourth party. Strangely enough, the one thing they seem to agree on is keeping other parties out of the system. And this vicious cycle of who grabs power will go on until Americans get disillusioned enough to want to change the whole political process itself.
