Society’s Growing Under-currents of Resistance

By Daniel Nardini

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - CommentaryThe signs are there—something is rotten in the state of America. Immigration raids, the threat to send in the U.S. military into Chicago and other Democrat-controlled cities and states. The threat to arrest and imprison Democrat officials because they are doing their jobs and opposing U.S. President Donald Trump because of his unconstitutional executive orders, and the growing disgust among average Americans for what the Republicans are doing (or rather not doing to improve the economy, not bring prices down, and threaten the right and freedoms Americans hold so dear). Yes, the Republican Party is nothing more than an appendage of one man, and they are paying a horrible price for it. I see it in the growing symbols of resistance in the streets. The election on November 4th should be a wake-up call for the Republicans of what a growing number of Americans think of them and what is yet coming. That off-year election was a complete victory for the Democrats and a total slaughter for the Republicans.

The symbols of resistance are now just about everywhere. One of the most.unmistakable ones is the Mexican flag itself. Many Americans of Mexican ancestry saw federal agents attack their families, their friends, their classmates, their neighbors, and their communities. Hence, the Mexican flag has become a symbol of both ancestral pride and defending their community. Another symbol is the rainbow flag—also known as the transgender flag. The Trump administration and indeed the whole of the Republican Party has become the sworn enemy of gays, lesbians and transgender people. Hence, this flag has become a symbol of not only pride but also defiance. I have seen this flag increasingly on car bumpers, flying on cars and from peoples’ homes, and in protests. Then there is the flag of Palestine or the Palestinian people. First seen in 2023 worldwide, the flag has become a symbol not just of solidarity with the people of Palestine but also a symbol against the Republicans. Whatever people in either the Democratic or Republican parties may think of this flag, the Palestine flag has just as equally become a symbol of resistance against the Trump government.

Although not as much used as the other flags and symbols, the red flag and the symbol of the Democratic Socialists and socialism in general are gaining favor with young people. Many are angry with what has happened under the Republicans, and many who were never really all that political before have been radicalized by what the Republicans have done in the short time they have been in control. Many young people have seen their families suffer because they lost their SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, or because the Republicans would not honor health care funding, or because they have seen their family and friends sink lower into poverty because of job losses and the increase in prices for food and utilities. This is more than enough for many young people to be radicalized against the Republicans. The sad thing is that so many Republican officials in Washington, D.C. do not see it, and blame the Democrats and Democratic Socialists for the policies the Republicans have carried out.

In the end, only the Republicans can be blamed for the radicalization taking place in society. They control the two main branches of government—the executive and the Congress. The president has called all the shots and the legislators have simply rolled over and done nothing. What appalls me is listening to Trump himself. He thinks everything is a conspiracy by the Democrats, and blames the news media for spreading “fake news.” It is becoming increasingly clear that Trump is living in a fantasy world, and is becoming ever more out of touch with reality of how ordinary people live. I have to ask the same question if the whole of the Republican Party has lost touch with reality? My recommendation is that the Republicans will have to face reality sooner or later. Trump and his minions will eventually be gone. Will the whole of the Republican Party be thrown in the dustbin with Trump? I am seeing how society is becoming radicalized, and I hope Republicans see the signs as I do.
