Venezuela: Fact from Fiction

By Daniel Nardini

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - CommentaryFiction: The U.S. military can intervene at any time in the internal affairs of Venezuela, and that the U.S. military is in charge of the entire country and in control of the entire oil fields which gives the United States the vast oil reserves of Venezuela.
Fact: the U.S. Congress, especially in the Senate, has made it clear that they are willing to pass the War Powers Act to prevent U.S. President Donald Trump from staging further military action against Venezuela. There are no American troops on the ground anywhere in Venezuela, and the only reason why Trump launched a military attack against Venezuela and seizing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was because the Congress was not in session. To put it mildly, many congressional senators and representatives, both Democrat and Republican, were infuriated by not being informed by Trump about his actions. They have made it clear that any further military action will not be funded by the Congress.

Fiction: The U.S. military has overthrown the government of Venezuela, and that Trump is now in control of the entire country. Trump made it clear he will rule Venezuela until he decides when democratic elections will be held
Fact: The socialist government Maduro and his predecessor Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez had created is still in charge of the country. Maduro’s vice-president, Delcy Rodriguez, was sworn in as acting president of the socialist government and that government has control of the resources of the country. Now that the Venezuelan military is on high alert, they are prepared for any further U.S. military action including destroying the oil fields and even conducting guerrilla warfare if necessary (what happened in the Iraq War as I recall).

Fiction: There was cheering by millions of Venezuelans all across Venezuela, and Trump has invited Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado to the White House to plan the restoration of democracy in Venezuela. Machado has “promised” to give Trump her Nobel Peace Prize for “saving her country.”
Fact: The Venezuelan military and the pro-Maduro militias are thoroughly in control. No one was in the streets in any city in Venezuela cheering for the end of Maduro. Rodriguez is still sending Venezuelan oil to China, Russia and Cuba. Whether the oil gets to it destination is another story. Venezuela has been antagonistic against the United States for some time, and now Venezuela will be even MORE antagonistic against the United States. To totally change what Venezuela is the United States would have to send in hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops to not only fight this socialist government and occupy the entire country for years to come, but expend money, resources and American lives in that pursuit..

No, nothing has really changed in Venezuela. Maduro has been taken out of the equation, but that is all. Beyond the extreme propaganda coming out of the Trump White House, Venezuela is still a socialist hellhole and no U.S. military force can change this. Only the people of Venezuela can really change the equation.
