Reducing Stigma Around Mental Health Illness

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - HealthLast week an 18-year-old model student committed suicide —the family cited his hopelessness about his ability to achieve his goals as an undocumented student. This followed another suicide several weeks ago of an 18-year-old who had sought help through authorities for alleged abuse to no avail. With too many cases like this around the country each month, one wonders whether anyone has been listening to—and acting to help–struggling Latino youth. The We Hear You. Te Escuchamos campaign plans to change that. Developed by The Latino Mental Health Network and the Center for Latino Mental Health at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and designed in partnership with the De La Croix Media Group, Te Escuchamos is a bi-lingual awareness campaign focused on reducing the stigma of mental health issues and illness within the Latino community. The We Hear You. Te Escuchamos is a ground-breaking campaign designed to reach Latino Youth ages 12 – 22, both to reduce the stigma in seeking help and to assist them in coping with mental health issues. On Saturday, Dec. 10th the We Hear You. Te Escuchamos Campaign will come to life at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, 1852 W. 22nd Pl from 10am to 2pm.
