The prominent U.S. newspaper the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has warned that if Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump keeps displaying erratic behavior then the Republican Party should throw him under the bus and either go with his vice-president pick Mike Pence or simply forget the presidential team and try to do all they can to salvage the Republican candidates up for election this year in the Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. Very strong language from a newspaper that has been ardently pro-Republican and extremely conservative. The WSJ is leading a rebellion against Trump and those who support him. They see his poll numbers declining, and worse see a complete rout for the Republicans in the presidential race come November.
In my view it is too late for any rebellion against Trump, and any chance to change course now. The WSJ can call for a rebellion all it wants, but since the Republican Party National Convention the nominee has been chosen and the majority of Republicans are behind their man. There is no question that many, many Republicans will not vote for Trump and will sit this one out. Some have even given their support to Trump’s rival Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Of course, the election is still two and a half months away. Many things can change. There is no question that Julian Assange and the Russians might plan an “October Surprise.” But so far the numbers are pretty solid, and they are beginning to favor Mrs. Clinton. In my view, the Republicans should have dealt with the matter of Donald Trump months ago. They could have and should have. The Republicans could have and should have dealt with the power and influence of the Tea Party and the influence of extremist right wing groups who helped Trump become the nominee. That the moderate and conservative Republicans have failed to do so is a lesson of too little and too late. Whatever valid points the Wall Street Journal might have why Donald Trump should be removed is too little and too late. The Republicans have sown the wind and shall reap the whirlwind.
