City of Chicago and COUNTRY Financial Kick Off Farmers Market Season

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - Local News The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and COUNTRY Financial will kick off the 2011 Chicago Farmers Markets season by revealing the winner of the fourth annual Reusable Bag Design Contest live on Daley Plaza Thursday, May 12 at 11a.m. Chicago Public School students participated in the contest and the winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship in addition to having his or her design displayed on 10,000 reusable shopping bags that will be distributed at farmers markets throughout the city this summer. Two runners-up will each receive a $500 scholarship. This year’s finalists include Brogan Faso of Lincoln Park High School, David Lopez of Steinmetz Academic Centre and Nevin Sanchez of Mather High School. May 12 signifies the start of the 32nd Chicago Farmers Market season, which continues through October. Seasonal items available at the markets include fresh flowers, baked goods, asparagus, lettuce, peas, radishes, spinach, sprouts, tomatoes, turnips and potting plants.
