Faith Leaders Preach Breast Health on Mother’s Day

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - Health Faith leaders throughout the Chicago area will speak to members about the importance of mammography screenings this Mother’s Day, May 8, as part of the Fifth Annual Pin-A-Sister™/ Examinate Comadre™ campaign. Churches play vital roles in the lives of African-Americans and Hispanics – mobilizing, informing and raising awareness about pertinent community issues. The Access Community Health Network-led Pin-A-Sister™/Examinate Comadre™ began as a faith-based initiative, but has expanded into a social network, where women of color commit to receive Pap smears and mammograms, and provide each other support to improve their health. The campaign’s hallmark event, Pin-A-Sister Sunday™/Domingo de Examínate Comadre™, aims to reach women through pink ribbon-pinning ceremonies that recognize those affected by breast cancer, while declaring a renewed commitment for women to ensure their breast health. Parishioners will assemble in hundreds of houses of worship throughout the Chicagoland area to:

  • Recognize breast cancer survivors and hear their stories;
  • Encourage women to get mammography screenings; and
  • Pin each other with pink ribbons to symbolize their commitment to get screened.
