St. Rita High School Commemorates Visit by Pope John Paul II

St. Rita of Cascia High School President Fr. Tom McCarthy, O.S.A. blesses a plaque commemorating the now Blessed John Paul II’s visit to Chicago in 1979 during a dedication ceremony held on Sunday, May 1. Fr. Tom is joined at the dedication ceremony by members of the St. Rita High School community along with Mr. Ed and Debbie Schmit and Family who donated the special commemoration plaque.

In conjunction with the beatification of Pope John Paul II on Sunday, May 1, St. Rita of Cascia High School dedicated a plaque commemorating the now Blessed John Paul II’s visit to Chicago in 1979. His Holiness visited the St. Rita of Cascia High School campus on October 5, 1979 when it was Quigley Seminary South. On that day, His Holiness met and addressed the entire American hierarchy along with tens of thousands of the faithful. The newly dedicated plaque is located at the front entrance of St. Rita High School on a pillar directly below the section of the roof where John Paul II stood to address the thousands in attendance.
