An Evening of Inspiration and Celebration

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - Health“Fun.” “Inspiring.” “A great time for a great cause.” That’s what guests had to say about Sinai Community Institute’s (SCI) Gala 2011, Connecting to Our Community. As a not-for-profit, health system-based community outreach organization serving over 30,000 clients a year through 26 different social service programs, SCI focuses on women and children, work force development, youth, seniors and families, serving some of Chicago’s most economically challenged neighborhoods—all at no cost to program participants.

Over 500 guests dined, danced, and enjoyed the company of host Earvin “Magic” Johnson at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers, Saturday June 18th, 2011. “Mr. Johnson was gracious, engaging, and so personable that he made you feel like you were a guest in his home rather than one of hundreds in a ballroom,” said Debra Wesley, president of SCI. The SCI Gala 2011honorees were:

  • Spirit of Sinai Award – Regina Taylor, actress, director, playwright
  • Sinai Volunteer and Community Service Award – Chicago Football Classic Founders
    • Larry Huggins, Riteway-Huggins Construction Services
    • Everett Rand, Midway Wholesalers, Inc.
    • Timothy Rand, Midway Concessionaires.
  • Sinai Community Partner Award – Univision and Telefutura Chicago
  • Sinai Hero Award – Gino Cook, Sinai Construction Trade Program
