H.A.S Unveils Public Art by At-Risk Youth

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - EducacionHealthcare Alternative Systems, Inc. (H.A.S.), 4534 S. Western Ave., unveiled “The Latino Family,” a series of life-size mosaic sculptures created by Urban Gateways artist Nicole Beck in collaboration with youth participants from the H.A.S. Youth Prevention Program on Friday, June 24. Youth Prevention is a community-based program that helps at-risk youth avoid substance abuse, gangs and violence, and teen pregnancy. For the past year, youth attending the Youth Prevention Program in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood have worked under Beck’s direction to assemble the sculptures, which celebrate Latino culture and family life. The group of sculptures, one of the first works of public art on Chicago’s South Side, will be permanently installed at the H.A.S. Youth Prevention site.
