Pilsen Wellness Center GEAR-UP Students Attend Youth Conference

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - EducationState Senator Martin Sandoval (D-12) hosted students from Gage Park, Pilsen, the Town of Cicero and North Lawndale-Little Village with a tour of the State Capitol while they were attending a youth leadership conference. The group- from Pilsen Wellness Center GEAR-UP Program – was lead by Angie Sandoval, Program mentor (at right). GEAR-UP/Illinois Steps AHEAD Program, funded by Illinois Department of Human Services, Division of Community Health and Prevention, offers educational services and constructive activities during after school hours for youth between 12 and 15 years of age. The key program components address improving academic performance; educational support for the Mathematics, Science, and Reading content areas; life and decision-making skills; increasing parental involvement; and providing recreational, cultural, and artistic activities supporting the vital academic content areas.
