Officials Call on Obama to Stop Deportations

 Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - Local NewsA united coalition of elected officials, including Congressman Luis Gutierrez, religious leaders, unions, and community organization joined together last week to call on President Barack Obama to stop the deportations of separation of families. On June 30, over 500 people gathered at the Teamster’s Hall, 300 S. Ashland, to show their support in calling out to President Obama to make these executive decisions. Attendees highlighted immigration as a top priority, surpassing jobs and the economy as the primary concern among Latinos. Approximately, 1,100 people are deported every day, the highest number in recent U.S. history.

Twenty-two U.S. Senators, including Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, numerous Members of Congress, and a variety of legal scholars believe President Obama has the discretion to stop the deportations of DREAM Act eligible students and the parents and spouses of U.S. citizens, among others, and this gathering will call on the President to use it. An immigration rally convened by a coalition of elected officials and community organizations calling on President Obama to stop the deportations and separation of families by taking the following three actions immediately:

    1. Ensure that the Secured Communities program returns to its original intent of deporting criminals.
    2. Provide more guidance to Immigration Customs Enforcement for allowing Hardship Waivers
    3. Stop the deportation of DREAM eligible students
