Berwyn to Honor 9/11 Anniversary

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - Local NewsOn Sunday, September 11, 2011 American’s across the nation will be pausing to reflect on the 10 year anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center. Over 3,000 “Civilians” lost their lives that day along with 343 “Bravest” from The New York City Fire Department and 60 “Finest” from The Port Authority and The New York City Police Forces. Almost everyone can remember what they were doing that day when the details of the attack began to unfold like it was yesterday. Mayor Lovero, Fire Chief O’Halloran and Police Chief Ritz are encouraging all City employees and elected officials to honor the somber anniversary by taking a few moments out of their day to post a tribute message to those who were lost, or who are still suffering as a result of that tragic day including what they were doing at the time of the attack.

A special web portal entitled “Berwyn 9/11 Memorial” was set-up for the posting and viewing of messages. Shortly after the he anniversary all of the postings will be copied and sent to members of the New York City Fire and Police Departments and the Port Authority Police Department. In addition, a grass roots effort that resulted in the entire State of North Carolina observing a radio moment of silence mushroomed into a National effort. The Mayor and both Chief’s are proud that the City of Berwyn will be participating in three separate moments of silence commemorating specific times and events on September 11, 2001.

  • At 0746 hours (CT), the time most closely associated with the beginning of the attack on the World Trade Center, an alert tone will be sounded on both Police and Fire main radio frequencies followed by a request for a moment of silence in memory of the brave Americans who lost their lives that day, and the largest number of duty related deaths in history.
  • At 0859 hours (CT), the time most closely associated with the collapse of
the South Tower of the Trade Center, an alert tone will again be sounded on both Police and Fire main radio frequencies followed by a request for another moment of silence.
  • At 0928 hours (CT), the time most closely associated with the collapse of
the North Tower of the Trade Center, an alert tone will again be sounded on both Police and Fire main radio frequencies followed by a request for a final moment of silence.
