Junior Achievement Partners with Chicagoland Leaders to Inspire Latino Youth

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - EducationJunior Achievement of Chicago will bring together more than 100 Latino students to learn from local community and business leaders on the importance of civic participation at the “JA Civics: Navigating Public Service,” event on Nov. 4 in Chicago. Held exactly one year to date from next year’s presidential election at Robert Morris University, the event aims to inspire the next generation of Latino leaders to be engaged in the community and to understand ethical decision making in business.

The day will begin with a keynote address provided by graduates of the United Neighborhood Organization’s Metropolitan Leadership Institute. The keynote speakers include businessman Lou Sandoval, co-owner/co-founder of Karma Yacht Sales LLC and current Council Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America-Chicago Area Council, and Angel Garcia, investigator at CME Group and previous candidate for Cook County Clerk. Speakers will address issues such as understanding the purpose of government, the changing American political spectrum, and voter turnout.

Junior Achievement of Chicago brings Latino volunteer role models to students through the well-established JA Latino Outreach Program, which expands upon JA’s traditional K-12 programs to include supplemental lessons geared towards staying in school, the importance of being bi-lingual, and the family as an economic unit. During the 2010-2011 school year, Junior Achievement of Chicago’s Latino Outreach Initiative reached over 31,000 students. For more information, visit ww.jachicago.org.
