Mexico Celebrates More than Christmas in December

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - Local NewsSones de Mexico Ensemble and special guest from Mexico City, Grupo Tribu, will perform Flor y Canto Decembrino (Songs for December), a family concert at the Olympic Theater, 6134 W. Cermak Rd. in Cicero on Friday, Dec. 9 at 7:30pm. The concert will bring together, with music, many of the diverse traditions that are practiced in Mexico during the month of December. December is a busy month of celebration in Mexico, not only is Christmas (Navidad) an important holiday; there is also several celebrations that echo Mexico’s rich indigenous past: from the annual pilgrimages of millions of people to see the Lady of Tepeyac (Virgin of Guadalupe) on December 12 to Panketzaliztli, the cult of the birth of Huitzilopochtli (the sun god and patron of the Mexicas) on the Winter’s solstice.
