Charter Network to Open School on West Side

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - EducationLEARN Charter School Network, which operates elementary schools that outperform others in the city, plans to open another school on the West Side next year. LEARN was among three charter networks selected to expand, following an extensive review process by the Chicago Public Schools. According to CPS, these networks have “proven track records of boosting student achievement and creating strong learning environments.”

Aiming to provide more school options for parents and students, the Chicago School Board recently announced that it is adding 12 new charter schools to serve 9,200 students in high-need communities by 2013. There is no entrance exam required; only a simple enrollment form.

LEARN currently operates five charter schools in Chicago, three on the West Side. Asha Brown chose to enroll her third grader in LEARN’s Romano Butler campus after constantly receiving calls from his previous school about his behavior and attentiveness.

Parents can learn more about charter schools on January 28, at the 5th Annual New Schools EXPO hosted by New Schools for Chicago and CPS. The event, which draws thousands of parents looking for options, will be indoors at Soldier Field. School representatives will accept enrollment forms on-site.
