People Gas Provides Tips on Carbon Monoxide Safety

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - Local NewsAs a number of Carbon Monoxide (CO) related incidents have appeared in the news lately, Peoples Gas wants to remind residents of the importance of having a working Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector in their homes. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless tasteless gas that can cause sickness and in some cases, death. Director of Media Relations for Peoples Gas Jennifer A. Block provides the following information to ensure that customers are engaging in safe practices while using natural gas.

  • It is extremely important that residents have a working carbon monoxide (CO) detector as required by Illinois law in their homes and apartments. Carbon monoxide detectors should be installed within 15 feet of sleeping areas. Batteries should be changed every six months to ensure they are working.
  • Carbon monoxide can come from inadequately burned feel and improperly vented appliances, such as water heaters, furnaces, space heaters, boilers, ranges/stoves, clothes dryers, grills, fireplaces, and portable generators. Never use an oven or stove flame as a means to heat your home.

If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, you should leave the premises immediately, get to a safe location and call 911 first, then the Peoples Gas emergency number at 1-866-556-6002. For more information on CO safety, visit www.peplesgasdelivery.com.
