Chicago Celebrates Cinco de Mayo

While this day is not Mexico’s independence as many tend to think, it has become a widely celebrated holiday across our nation. Here are only a few of the events and celebrations taking place this weekend in our lovely City of Chicago.

For all you runners out there, register for this weekend’s Cinco de Miler. Race day is Sunday, May 6th with a tentative start time of 9:30am. Participants will complete a 5k taking place at Montrose Harbor. The lucky top three male and female from overall finishers will be awarded a “Cinco de Miler” sombrero! Little Village has grown to be known as “Little Mexico,” and living up to its predominantly Mexican residents it is site of one of the major parades for this holiday. Cinco de Mayo Festival ( 26th Street and Kostner) is a three day event starting Friday, May 4th at 6pm and concluding Sunday, May 6th features traditional cuisine, arts, live music, and activities for both adults and children. You won’t want to miss one of the biggest Mexican festivals of the Midwest!

If you haven’t attended a live comedy show then put that on your bucket list! Nothing beats experiencing comedy and performing arts in a live setting. Support Salsation Theatre Company, a non-profit organization that seeks to inspire artistic creativity to Latinos and non-Latinos, in their Cinco de Salsation a benefit fiesta. It will take place Saturday, May 5th from 6pm-10pm at Ristorante al Teatro (1227 W. 18th Street). This fundraiser will feature a raffle, door prices, delicious food, and live entertainment. Take advantage of this weekend’s low chance of rain for some outdoor celebration with the Cinco de Mayo Street Festival on Honore and Milwaukee from 3pm to 8pm. Benefit from live music, outdoor grilling and sangria. This event will be partnered with Salud Tequila Lounge located 1471 N. Milwaukee.
