Guns in Syria Versus Schools in Chicago

By: Daniel Nardini

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - Commentary   It could not be more of a guns versus bread and butter issue. We are seeing U.S. President Barack Obama trying to attack the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad and maybe providing weaponry to the Syrian rebels, while right here at home schools are being closed in Chicago for lack of money. Due to lack of money, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been doing the unthinkable—closing fifty schools in largely African American and Latino communities. I know that his decisions may seem arbitrary and heartless. But there is just simply no money available. Not just in Chicago but the State of Illinois, which has a state debt of U.S. $154 billion.

There is no question that Emanuel is caught between a rock and a hard place, so he has had to make cuts where necessary. These cuts hurt ordinary families, but the ever greater danger is that the City of Chicago’s infrastructure of government could simply collapse. The city would have to default like Detroit did, and there would be no way out for the city or its residents. We are already seeing what is happening to Detroit—it is a virtual war zone. This could be the future of Chicago if the ship is not turned around before it hits the iceberg. Mayor Emanuel has had to make tough, extremely painful decisions that are to put it mildly totally unenviable and I cannot blame him for what he has had to do.
I blame the d—-d fool in the White House in Washington, D.C. for trying to get America involved in yet another war that will cost this nation. We are not sure what it will cost, how far U.S. President Barack Obama will go in “punishing” Assad, and if the United States will get more involved in this protracted civil war. We do know that the money is coming from a number of sources, and sadly this includes money that might keep some of the schools slated for closing in Chicago. Obama promised to put America back to work, build new factories and make more jobs available, He said he wanted to be the education president and extend the hours and days for kids to remain in school.
Well, when you close the schools and bus kids to other schools far from their homes, how much can they really learn? Those schools that would remain open will now have that much more of a burden to take care of those kids coming from those schools closing. Is it fair for President Obama to take money from rebuilding this country’s crumbling infrastructure and waste it on a war with poorly defined objectives and no benefit for this country?
