Two City Colleges Of Chicago Student-Athletes Claim Region IV Award

Sophomore guard Will Martinez of the Malcolm X College men’s basketball team and freshman forward Veronica Taylor, a member of the Richard J. Daley College women’s basketball team, were selected as the Region IV Players of the Week on Jan. 21.

Martinez, who also earned the Player of the Week award Dec. 2, had 45 points, 13 assists, five steals, five rebounds and two blocks in two Malcolm X (14-5) wins.

In a 101-59 triumph over Trinity International University’s junior varsity team Jan. 16, Martinez totaled 19 points, eight assists, three steals, four rebounds and one block. A native of Gurabo, Puerto Rico, Martinez is seeking a degree in general studies.

Taylor led Daley (5-11) to a 2-0 showing for the week after scoring 34 points on 15-of-26 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 accuracy at the free throw line. She also had 17 rebounds, three steals and a block.

In Daley’s 58-51 victory against Harper College on Jan. 13, Taylor supplied 10 points, a team-best eight rebounds and two steals. She topped all players with 24 points in a 58-56 overtime win over Highland Community College on Jan. 18 in a game in which she led the Bulldogs with nine rebounds while also recording one steal and one block.

Taylor, a graduate of South Shore High School, is pursuing an associate of art degree in Liberal Arts. She is undecided on her major.

City Colleges of Chicago men’s and women’s basketball players have been named Region IV Player of the Week 12 times and NJCAA Player of the Week twice during the 2013-14 basketball season.
