Alcohol Awareness Month: Study Reveals Sobering Illinois Stat on Binge Drinking

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - Health

As we mark Alcohol Awareness Month in April, there is some sobering news for Illinoisans. According to United Health Foundation’s 2014 America’s Health Rankings®, we rank among the highest of 50 states in prevalence of binge drinking, defined as males having five or more drinks and females having four or more drinks on one occasion.

More than 20 percent of the Illinois population engages in binge drinking. It’s a major reason why the state ranks in the bottom half in overall health (30th). Illinoisans should be aware about the dangers of overindulging. According to the CDC, excessive alcohol use remains the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States. It can lead to drunk-driving injuries and deaths, and cause increased aggression, unintentional injury, fetal damage and liver diseases, among other health risks.

Let’s use this month to raise awareness about alcohol’s effects and take action to help improve our health, at home and in our communities.
