Shedd Aquarium is making a splash this holiday season by inviting the public to participate in helping to name its newest male Pacific white-sided dolphin calf in partnership with ABC7 WLS Chicago beginning this week. The public is encouraged to vote for their favorite name online at www.abc7chicago.com/shedd as well as observe the calf 24 hours a day via a live, underwater web cam of the Abbott Oceanarium at www.SheddAquarium.com/NameTheDolphin. Participants can submit votes as often as they like until Dec. 15 at 3p.m. The Hawaiian name choices provided by animal trainers at Miami Seaquarium where the calf was naturally conceived include Kolohe (koh-LOH-heh), which means “rascal,” and Makoa (mah-KOH-ah), meaning “fearless.” The final name will be revealed during a live broadcast at the aquarium on Dec. 16 at 6:55 a.m. People are also encouraged to share their choice on social media using the hashtag #NametheDolphin and either #TeamKolohe or #TeamMakoa.
