Triton College is offering a new certification program starting spring 2016 that will put students on the fast track to obtaining a job in the health care industry. Triton’s Certified Medical Assistant Program is a 34-hour course of study that prepares graduates to serve as a multi-skilled allied health care professional trained to perform clinical and administrative tasks in an outpatient setting. Medical assistants typically serve under the supervision of a licensed physician or other similarly qualified independent health practitioner or therapist, who they’ll assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and perform other tasks to meet patient needs and manage clinic operations. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has consistently indicated that employment in the field of medical assistants is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations – 23 percent much faster! Plus, the average number of job openings through 2022 is projected to be 706 per year in Illinois and 232 per year in the Chicago area (Cook County), according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security. Graduates of the certificate program can expect to make a median salary of $15 per hour or nearly $30,000 a year.
