The Profiling Fallacy

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has repeated that the U.S. government should profile American Muslims. He has called for surveillance of Muslim places of worship and gatherings; he has called for a special database on American Muslims, and even proposed that all Muslims carry special identification cards identifying them as Muslims. Shades of Nazi Germany! This is pretty crazy, and no doubt will only cause even greater rifts in the Republican Party as more and more leading Republican officials will have to distance themselves from this person. Just as ironic is the fact that a British teenager tried to grab an American policeman’s gun to shoot Trump.

Strangely, the teenager was a 19-year old kid named Michael Steven Sandford. Interestingly enough, if Trump applied his profiling criteria, then a would-be assassin like Sandford would never have been spotted. Truth be told that there are hundreds of shootings and mass shootings in the United States every year, and almost none of these are reported because they might not kill more than three to five individuals at any one time. And none of these mass shooters identify themselves as belonging to the Islamic State, Al Qaeda, or any other terrorist group. Mass shooters can be white, black, Asian, Native American, young, old, man or woman, or formerly or currently in the U.S. armed forces. In other words, there is no such thing as a typical mass shooter. It is like assuming that all “illegals” are Mexican or from Central America. Apparently Mr. Trump has never heard of undocumented from Poland, Russia, Ukraine, and even the Republic of Ireland!

Since when can all white people do no wrong? If Trump ever gets into the White House, he will set this country back for three generations.
