Part Two of the Mexican Drama

by Daniel Nardini

While U.S. President Donald Trump keeps pushing for the building of a large border wall, more leftist politicians are pushing for a major lawsuit in the International Criminal Court about the treaty Mexico was “forced” to sign in 1848. Known as the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the treaty forced Mexico to give up almost half of its territory to the United States. The lawsuit, the brain child of leftist politician and former presidential candidate Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, argues that because the United States invaded Mexican territory in an attempt to conquer parts of Mexico the treaty was forced upon Mexico and is therefore null and void. In reality the lawsuit has little chance of ever succeeding, and even if the International Criminal Court did rule in Mexico’s favor, the United States would never abide by the Court’s decision.

The move is more symbolic. It will give the political left a powerful boost for Mexico’s presidential elections to be held in 2018. One possible leftist candidate for next year’s election, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has totally denounced the possible building of the wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, and has pledged to fight against anything Trump does against Mexico. There is no doubt that the political left is using Donald Trump as a punching bag, and a powerful boogeyman to help coalesce the whole political left to win the presidential elections next year. With relations between the United States and Mexico already at a low ebb, the Mexican political left is going to push the envelope of Mexican nationalism in an opportunity to win the presidential elections. It just might work. More and more Mexicans are beginning to see current Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto as a “weak” and spineless leader. The fact that Pena Nieto is simply trying to salvage relations with the United States shows his restraint in an increasingly poisoned political atmosphere—-poisoned by Donald Trump who is still pushing a very anti-Mexican xenophobia in America. This may result in a Mexican leftist triumph and a very dangerous payback to the United States that we all cannot afford.
