On Friday, June 16th, more than 200 second and third graders from across the city gathered at the second annual First Move Chess Event for a jam-packed chess celebration at Guaranteed Rate Field complete with gaming stations, arts and crafts, prizes, and an appearance by “the Chess Lady” from the First Move chess program. Students from Earle Elementary, Jensen Elementary, Ogden Elementary School, and Southeast Elementary were given a Passport to Chess to earn stamps for visiting chess strategy stations. The First Move Chess Event was held in partnership with First Move — a classroom curriculum program for second and third graders that uses chess to teach critical and analytical thinking skills. Approximately 10,000 CPS students use First Move in classrooms throughout the city.
