The union representing Environmental Protection Agency employees in the Midwest on Friday urged the Trump administration to release a key U.S. Army Corps of Engineers study providing guidance on preventing Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes. The report, known as the Brandon Road Lock and Dam study, has been under development for years, but its release has been delayed by the Trump White House. Last week, adult Silver Carp was discovered within miles of Lake Michigan. “If Asian carp gets past the locks, it’s game over for the Great Lakes,” said AFGE Local 704 President Mike Mikulka. “The Trump administration needs to take the brick off the Brandon Road Study right now, before it’s too late.” AFGE Local 704 said it supports the Stop Asian Carp Now Act, sponsored by U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL). Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Gary Peters (D-MI). The act would require the Trump Administration to release the Brandon Road Study within seven days of the bill’s enactment. “Every Senator and Congressman who represents the millions of Americans who rely on the Great Lakes must loudly support the Stop Asian Carp Now Act,” said Mikulka. “This is not a drill–our drinking water and our local economies are in serious danger.” Mikulka said the Asian carp crisis is just the latest example of why the EPA’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative must be taken off the Trump administration’s chopping block. “President Trump’s proposed budget zeroes out funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative right when the Great Lakes are under threat,” said Mikulka. “Eliminating that funding would put the drinking water for more than 30 million people in the United States and Canada at risk. Members of Congress must make it clear they will not accept these dangerous cuts.”
