Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - HealthBrazilian race car driver Helio Castroneves is ready for the competition. “I love this competitive sport,” said Castroneves during an interview with Lawndale Bilingual Newspaper prior to Sunday’s infamous Indianapolis 500 (Indy500). “It is such an adrenaline rush when you step inside your car. You have to be laser sharp, focused, and alert.” Castroneves, who grew up in Brazil, was exposed to the world of race car driving at a young age. “Growing up in Brazil where soccer is the dominant sport, I was the only one in my family and friends who wanted to race. So when I was gifted my first go-kart that’s all I did every day,” said Castroneves. For years, Castroneves has dedicated his time to improving his craft, which paid off as he is a three-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 (2001, 2002, 2009), has tied for 11th all-time in Indy cars with 29 race wins, fourth all-time in Indy car pole positions with 47, and most importantly, is one of the few Latinos on the track. “To be among the few Latinos who have made a name for themselves is truly an honor. We work hard at this sport because we love it so much. It’s truly an honor to hopefully inspire younger generations of Latinos who want to enter the world of race car.” Currently, Castroneves is prepping for Sunday’s Indy 500 where he hopes to win the title once more. “I’ve prepped this whole time. All I can do now is just clear my head and enjoy the experience.” Check your local listings to catch the 102nd Indy 500.
