Alderman Edward M. Burke (14th) and Chicago Planning Commissioner David Reifman joined Amigos Foods President Max Hurtado (center) this week in breaking ground on a $25 million food processing and warehouse facility in the Archer Heights community. Amigos Foods is building a new facility on a 10-acre vacant site at 51st Street and St. Louis Avenue. The project will generate 150 union construction jobs and 50 full-time jobs when it opens in 2020. “Amigos Foods is one of the Midwest region’s leading meat distributors,” Alderman Burke said. “The addition of this facility demonstrates the company’s outstanding corporate commitment and will further revitalize our community by bringing new jobs to the 14th Ward.” Amigos Foods provides a full line of protein products including beef, pork, poultry, lamb, seafood and cheese and operates facilities in Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, and Phoenix. Amigos Foods is currently headquartered at 5251 South Millard Avenue in Chicago and has 100 employees. The 110,000 square facility will be constructed with insulated metal and concrete precast panels, and insulated tinted glass. The first floor of the main building will contain freezer/storage space, a processing and staging area and office space. The second floor will contain employee areas and offices. The north side of the main building will include space for future expansion.
