Following an application process that was open to the public, Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Friday announced that Illinois State Representative Silvana Tabares will be the new Alderman representing Chicago’s 23rd Ward. “Silvana Tabares has been an effective state legislator and is a key ally in efforts to bring more money to Chicago schools, crack down on illegal gun traffickers and provide necessary funding to local police and first responders,” said Mayor Emanuel. “Her knowledge and relationships with the people of the community, coupled with her service and accomplishments as a State Representative, have prepared her to be an accessible and effective advocate for 23rd Ward residents.”
The selection of Tabares came after a thorough process in which four candidates were reviewed by a five-member selection committee. The committee recommended two finalists who were then interviewed by the Mayor last week before he made his final decision. “As the only daughter of a single mother growing up on the southwest side of Chicago, I know how important a strong neighborhood is for our young people and families, and as a State Representative, I have sought to protect working families and the neighborhoods they call home,” said Tabares. “It is an honor to continue this work as the 23rd Ward Alderman, a role in which I will continue to fight for strong schools, safe streets and good jobs.” Tabares will appear in front of the City Council’s Rules Committee prior to a confirmation vote by the City Council on June 27th. Mayor Emanuel thanked the selection committee for their efforts on behalf of the City of Chicago. The members of the committee, who interviewed candidates and sent two finalists to the Mayor, are:

• Al Cacciottolo, 23rd Ward Superintendent

• Alejandrina Cerna, owner and lead teacher at My Zmall World Childcare Center

• Alderman Michelle Harris, Chair of the Committee on Committees, Rules and Ethics

• Father John Noga, Pastor of St. Daniel the Prophet Church

• James Sweeney, President of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150
