This October, the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) joins in the celebration of National Community Planning Month. Established in 2006, National Community Planning Month is a way to highlight the role of planners and the importance of good planning in communities across the region. 2018 year marks the 20th anniversary of the RTA’s Community Planning program, and the RTA’s involvement in community planning as it relates to public transportation and transit-supportive land use. “Good planning creates access to transit and opportunity for all. Thorough planning, strategic investments in innovation and infrastructure boosts the economy and strengthens communities,” said Leanne Redden, RTA Executive Director. “While people may not realize it, planning significantly impacts day-to-day lives. From where they live, to how they commute, to the type of home they live in, planning plays a vital role in a person’s life and well-being.” By providing technical assistance and support to complete plans and implement those plans, the RTA’s Community Planning program has encouraged municipalities in the region to develop walkable and more sustainable communities near transit stations and along transit corridors.
