Mayoral candidate Toni Preckwinkle announces the release of her LGBTQ platform that focuses on justice and inclusion for transgender Chicagoans, equity for all LGBTQ people in every neighborhood, and investing in community programs to eliminate new HIV infections by 2030. Toni’s platform leads with a slate of commitments to address transgender disparities: She will work with Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx and the proposed Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice to prioritize the many unsolved murders of transgender women of color in Chicago and designate the cases as suspected hate crimes. She’s also committed to reforming the Chicago Police Department’s policy on interactions and detainment of transgender individuals in line with proposals supported by the ACLU, Equality Illinois, and several other community organizations. Preckwinkle’s LGBTQ platform also has focus on equitable distribution of city resources for LGBTQ and HIV programs. One of Preckwinkle’s first acts as mayor will be to create a city-wide (including sister agencies) commission tasked with building a strategic plan to equitably and comprehensively address the needs of LGBTQ Chicagoans, regardless of the neighborhood in which they reside.
