Chicago Girls Compete in ComEd Icebox Derby

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - Local NewsThirty young women ages 13 to 18 participated in the sixth-annual ComEd Icebox Derby, a program the energy company developed to encourage women to pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and careers. The derby was held at the Daley Plaza from noon to 3p.m. The young girls raced to the finish in solar-powered race cars made out of recycled refrigerators that they built themselves alongside the mentorship of ComEd employees. Executive producer and star of Little Marsai Martin was a celebrity guest at the event and encouraged the young girls to pursue their dreams. Each participant received a $1,500 scholarship.
