A delegation from the Obama CBA Coalition delivered a letter to Mayor Lightfoot, calling for a meeting and outlining outstanding concerns with the Mayor’s proposed ordinances on affordable housing for Woodlawn. The Coalition is concerned the Mayor’s proposal will create housing that is too expensive and out of reach for current residents. The Delegation took place Tuesday at the Mayor’s Office. Later that evening, the Coalition held a community forum with Alderwoman Jeanette Taylor to discuss the affordable housing ordinances. According to Sharon Payne, a community leader with the Obama CBA Coalition: “We are pleased that the Mayor is focusing energy on the need for affordable housing in our area. However, we must make sure that housing built on city land is actually affordable to current residents. The rent levels on these units must be set at levels affordable to minimum wage workers, security guards, home care workers and lunch ladies. We also need that 30 percent affordable housing set aside. We cannot wait. We are being pushed out now. There is a higher set aside requirement on the Milwaukee Corridor. If it’s good enough for the north side, it’s good enough for the south side. We need that 30 percent set aside, and we need it now.”
