State Rep. Elizabeth “Lisa” Hernandez, D-Cicero, is fighting for Illinoisans living with diabetes in the wake of recent efforts by congressional Republicans to block a federal cap on insulin prices. Hernandez is backing state-level efforts to cap insulin prices in Illinois at $35 a month under state-regulated insurance plans. Hernandez is sponsoring House Bill 1466, which caps the cost of insulin at $35 for a 30-day supply and creates an emergency insulin discount program so those with diabetes do not face a crushing financial burden to pay for life-saving medication. The bill is currently awaiting consideration by the Illinois Senate. On top of her advocacy for people with diabetes, Hernandez was instrumental in the work to expand health care coverage for undocumented Illinois residents ages 42 and older.
