Ending a Political Era

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - CommentaryExactly how long are we going to have very old men for presidents of the United States? Joe Biden is now the oldest elected serving U.S. president in our history, and the Democratic Party is still considering him to run for reelection in 2024. He is now 80 years old. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is now 76 years old. In 2024, Biden will be 82 years old and Trump will be 78 years old. It is too early to tell, but Trump’s star seems to be fading. Other Republican presidential candidates, like Ron DeSantis, seems to be gaining in popularity. And Biden? So far, there are no real Democratic presidential candidates to challenge him. But it is too early to tell.

There are three problems I see with both Biden and Trump. First, both are perceived as being “too old.” Many voters, especially those age 40 and under, see these two men as too old for being in the highest single office in the land. Second, many voters do not feel that these two men represent their political views. These two men are seen as being well beyond the conditions that exist in the United States of the 21st Century. Many people, especially younger voters age 35 and under, feel that there should be new leadership with new ideas and whose purpose is to get beyond the extreme partisan bickering that has engulfed both the Democratic and Republican parties.

Finally, one of the reasons why we are seeing the emergence of the Forward Party is because a new demographic, younger voters age 30 and under, are becoming independents who want something new, bold, and more bipartisan. They have been turned off by both ruling parties, and they are turning to whoever might represent their political viewpoints. Personally, I have nothing against old people, but we have to keep in mind that an elected official has to be ready to meet very serious challenges and may have to make decisions that affect tens of millions of people both in the United States and around the world. Many people do not feel that Biden or Trump can meet these challenges. One is still president, and one was resident. In many peoples’ view, they had their chance and now it is time for “new blood.”

A growing number of people want a real change, a new political era to fit the early 21st Century. They want candidates with bold new ideas that are not stuck in the 20th Century. Many Americans want to see a drastic change in the direction this country is going in. Will the presidential election of 2024 be the answer? This is a major unknown, and we cannot even begin to guess what will happen in the next six months never mind towards the end of 2024. One thing is for sure; those born in the last decade of the 20th Century and those born in the very beginning of the 21st Century have a very different viewpoint of history, politics, society and culture. Almost an entire generation has grown up since the Al Qaeda attacks on September 11, 2001, and they have no real recollection of that event. Many are now becoming voters, and they will play a part in the presidential election of 2024. We may yet see the end of a political era.
