A Conversation That Went South

By Daniel Nardini

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - CommentaryI lost a friend. No, he did not die, or become incapacitated. He is still very much alive. I lost him over something that should have never happened. I lost him in an argument. It all had to do with the last presidential election. I simply said that Joe Biden won the election by 10 million votes, that the election was free and fair, and that former President Donald Trump did not accept the election results and so he had planned a coup. My friend argued that the Democrats stole the election, and that “patriots” from all over the country went to the nation’s capital to protest the loss of their country. I argued that what happened January 6, 2021, was an insurrection by then President Trump to overturn the certification of the election by the U.S. Congress. He contended that the “patriots” went to the Capital Building to stop the stealing of the election, and that it was a peaceful event.

I said that these protesters broke into the Capital Building and killed police officers. He counter-stated that the Democrats called out the army and killed a whole lot of “innocent, unarmed protesters” and arrested thousands of innocent others. I called them “insurrectionists” while he called them “patriots.” We had no reference point of facts, and so I just left. There was no point in the conversation anymore. What made it worse was that he had called me “a dupe of the Democrats” and that I did not know how to do my job as a former news correspondent. This was the last straw for me. This relationship will never be the same. What hit me hard was the fact that he had served in the U.S. Army in Germany, so he had been abroad. Apparently this has not helped him see the total hypocrisy of how the truth has been either distorted or otherwise totally built on fabrications. Even now, tens of millions of Americans believe this non-sense that the 2020 presidential election was rigged and the Democrats stole the election. And when Trump called his supporters to the capital to peacefully protest they were set upon by the U.S. Army secretly called out by the Democrats who are now hunting down any and all “patriots” throughout the land.

Further, these “patriots” are now “political prisoners” languishing in federal prisons where they “are being denied basic care and tortured.” Never have I heard so much whitewash and distortion of the truth. The level of these untruths just horrify me. And it bothers me that so many in the Republican Party are just as guilty of promoting this myth as well as Trump being a “man of the people.” In my view, Trump is the greatest conman in American history. But he alone could NEVER have perpetrated any of this without those in the Republican Party along with extremist right-wing media outlets such as Fox News and Newsmax to aid in this hoax. In my view friendship has to be built upon trust, and acceptance of the facts. At this point I have NO friends in the Republican Party, and certainly no friends among Trump supporters. I do not care to have friends among these people. When truth becomes a casualty, the price is too high.
