Saint Anthony Hospital Installs Technology for Family Members to Connect with Newborns

Saint Anthony Hospital is bringing first of its kind technology in Chicago to its maternity center. New video conferencing technology has been installed in each patient room to connect families across and outside the United States. An app on a mobile phone is all that’s required for out-of-town family members to be able to communicate and see their loved ones in real time. The video call will transmit through a large screen TV in the mother’s room. Special software ensures conversations are encrypted and secure. The system provides a hands-free experience for patients who may not be able to access a cell phone or tablet while undergoing care or holding a newborn. “We adapt to the needs of our patient population, some of whom face family dynamics that make it more difficult for mothers to have family comfort and support on hand after giving birth,” said President and CEO Guy A. Medaglia. “This new technology is an example of what we do every day at Saint Anthony Hospital, which is to provide innovative, high-quality care to an underserved population.” The new technology is designed to provide a positive experience for new mothers and connect family members or friends that can’t be present. A community hospital, Saint Anthony accepts everyone, regardless of insurance or immigration status, and offers every patient a range of health, wellness, and educational assistance.
