Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is excited to celebrate National School Counseling Week and the District’s more than 800 school counselors who work every day to ensure CPS students are equipped for postsecondary success. The District joins The American School Counselor Association (ASCA), which sets professional standards and competencies, in recognizing National School Counseling Week and our counselors’ positive impact on student attendance, discipline, and student achievement. Of the 33 school counseling programs in Illinois that have earned Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) certification, 19 of them are in Chicago Public Schools. RAMP certification is awarded to schools that are in full alignment with the ASCA National Model and is valid for five years. Research shows that students who have access to a comprehensive school counseling program that aligns to the ASCA National Model have better educational and postsecondary outcomes. CPS’ Office of School Counseling and Postsecondary Advising hopes to continue this trend in years to come, with nine additional schools currently pending certification. Chicago Public Schools’ Office of School Counseling and Postsecondary Advising (OSCPA) will recognize the role of counselors with special programming throughout the week.
