Bedford Park suspect arrested, charged by Bridgeview Police in remote car-start Killing

A 20-year-old Bedford Park man was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder late Friday evening in the shooting death of a Bridgeview man who was walking to his car, which he remote started. Arturo Cantu, 39, was shot twice as he left his apartment at the 7300 Block of 79th Street at 5 AM on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 on his way to work.

Bridgeview Police charged Anthony Calderon, 20, with First Degree Murder in the killing late Friday night. Cantu was walking to his car when he was confronted by the suspect, Anthony Calderon, who is from the 7700 Block of 65th Place in Bedford Park, Illinois.

Cantu’s body was found on the side of his apartment building where he was pronounced dead at the scene, Bridgeview Police Chief Ricardo Mancha said Saturday. Joined by the Major Crime Task Force, the Bridgeview Police were able to secure video from nearby business establishments to help identify and lead them to the suspect who was arrested Friday.

The First Degree Murder charges against Calderon were approved by the Cook County State’s attorney late on Friday night, May 17, 2024. Mancha said that the shooting was an isolated incident and that the investigation into the reason for the assault and killing are under continued investigation.
