Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon is recognizing Military Consumer Month this July by encouraging veterans and military families to protect themselves from fraud while highlighting free programs offered through the Clerk’s Office that safeguard property, preserve important records, and connect veterans with valuable benefits. Military consumers reported losing more than $584 million to fraud in 2024, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Scammers routinely target military families through impostor schemes, fake investment pitches, fraudulent charities, bogus VA benefits offers, and property fraud. The Clerk’s Office recommends a few basic precautions: be skeptical of unsolicited calls, emails, texts, or social media messages asking for personal or financial information; verify anyone claiming to represent the VA, a bank, a government agency, or a charity before sharing sensitive details; watch for pressure tactics or guaranteed returns; check financial accounts and property records regularly; and report suspected fraud right away. Veterans, military families, and homeowners can learn more about the Property Fraud Alert Program, the Military and Veterans Discount Program, DD-214 recording services, and other Clerk’s Office resources by visiting cookcountyclerk.com.
