Severe weather moved through ComEd’s northern Illinois service territory on Monday, bringing heavy rains and flooding, high wind gusts up to 80 mph, downed trees and hail, as well as preliminary reports of tornadoes. These conditions inflicted widespread damage to communities and power grid infrastructure, causing outages for more than 530,000 customers across the service territory. A comprehensive response is underway, with ComEd crews working overnight and over 2,300 personnel dispatched Tuesday morning, responding to reports of damage, including downed trees and power lines. ComEd expects to restore power to the vast majority of remaining customers by 10pm on Friday, July 31. Crews will prioritize restoration of hospitals, followed by critical services such as police and fire departments, then repairs that restore the greatest number of customers, before shifting focus to smaller neighborhoods and individual homes. Customers can access more tailored restoration estimates for their homes or businesses and repair status updates in the new ComEd’s Outage Tracker at ComEd.com/OutageTracker.
