If you receive Medicaid benefits, there are important changes you need to know about. Starting Jan. 1, 2027, some enrollees will need to meet new work, education or community service requirements to keep their coverage. They will also have to reapply for Medicaid every six months, instead of once a year. These new federal requirements will apply to individuals in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) expansion population, also known as ACA adults, who:

• are ages 19 to 64,

• do not receive Medicare, and

• do not have a dependent child age 18 or younger in their home.

While some Medicaid enrollees may be exempt from work requirements, it’s important to be aware of these changes and how they might affect you. Make sure the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services has your current contact information so they can tell you if you have to do something new to keep your coverage.
