Canada Remains One

Lawndale News Chicago's Bilingual Newspaper - CommentaryIn short, the province of Alberta voted “no” to a non-binding resolution asking if the province should create a binding vote for separation from the rest of Canada. The vote was 74 percent against leaving Canada to 25 percent for those advocating for the secession resolution (with less than one percent undecided). For the Canadian government of Prime Minister Mark Carney, this is a major victory. Despite the efforts of the U.S. government under President Donald Trump to cause Canada to splinter, this has not happened. Two things have come out of this. First, efforts by the U.S. government to foment separatist movements in Canada have backfired. Second, many Canadians have come to realize that a Canada as one country is far preferable to separated provinces trying to go at it alone.

One other important thing is that the identity of Canada as a nation seems almost unshakable. Despite separatist movements happening in parts of Canada (especially in the French-speaking province of Quebec), many Canadians have been a country long enough for the people seeing themselves as Canadian rather than as residents of any one province like Ontario, Alberta, Quebec. New Brunswick, etc. And in the end, this is good for Canada. Imagine what would happen if Alberta separated. Individual provinces would not have a unified trade network or maybe even a unified currency. If there is no Canadian currency, then this could mean complete chaos in North America. Thank goodness this will not happen.

In the long run this is also good for the United States and Mexico. A stable Canada is a safe North America. What the United States needs is a stable and unified Canada. I am happy to see this. A unified Canada is for all due purposes in the best interests of Canadians, Americans, Mexicans, and the entire world.
